$1 billion for Baghdad projects 17/11/2006

More than $1 billion has been made available to Iraqi authorities for reconstruction projects over the coming months, a top US official was quoted as saying in Press reports. Daniel Speckhard, deputy chief of mission at the US embassy, quoted by an AFP report, said more than $1 billion has been spent in a slew of projects in Baghdad over the past three years. ‘And for the other ongoing and new projects, we have another billion dollars available,’ Speckhard said after the workshop attended by Deputy Prime Minister Barham Saleh and top US military and civil officials. Among the key projects completed or almost nearing completion are a $37-million electrical substation in the southern Al Rashid district and a seven-million-dollar water treatment plant in Sadr City, northeast Baghdad. Saleh stressed at the gathering that Baghdad would be the focus for reconstruction in the coming months. ‘In the last six months Baghdad has received funds equal to what it got in the last 10 years,’ said Saleh. Speckhard also highlighted that most of the contracts were now being executed by Iraqi companies, except ‘those which are large and require specialized technology’.

Traders eyeing Iraq's huge reconstruction process
and the billions of business dollars
it is generating will be able to display their
products once again at the Rebuild Iraq 2007
exhibition. Rebuild Iraq 2007 will underscore the
vast scale of reconstruction needs in Iraq: power
facilities and electrical grids have to be restored,
oil and gas supplies nurtured, airports, roads and
schools rebuilt, and seaports transformed. Iraq is
in desperate need of a full range of infrastructure
products, services and systems, including: hospital
equipment and medicines; security products; road
and rail machinery; oil production tools; and
finance and telecom systems.
Infrastructure projects and major construction are
proceeding at a quick pace across Iraq, utilizing
funds from the international rebuilding effort, be it
the $18 billion from the USA, the $8 billion from
donor countries, the $5.5 billion from the World
Bank and the IMF, and the funds generated by the
growing oil exports.
